Most of Caleres’ sales come from consumers buying shoes directly. Its larger business, Famous Footwear, sells casual, athletic and fashion shoes for the whole family through stores and websites. It carries outside brands such as Nike, Skechers and adidas alongside Caleres brands. Women’s footwear accounts for most company-wide sales.
The other business, Brand Portfolio, designs and sources footwear under owned and licensed brands, including Sam Edelman, Vionic, Naturalizer, Allen Edmonds and Stuart Weitzman. Retailers pay Caleres for shoes they resell in stores or online; consumers also buy directly from the brands’ own stores and websites. This makes Caleres both a retailer of other companies’ shoes and a supplier of its own branded footwear.
Famous Footwear relies on major branded suppliers, with Nike, Skechers and adidas products contributing a substantial share of Caleres’ sales. It has no long-term supplier contracts. Caleres also sources most footwear from independent manufacturers, with Vietnam its largest sourcing country. It orders inventory ahead of selling seasons, so matching the assortment to demand—particularly during back-to-school shopping—matters to sales and the need for discounts.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Watch Nike, Skechers and adidas: Caleres depends materially on their products, which together represented approximately 24% of its 2025 consolidated net sales.
Designer Brands competes with Caleres’ Famous Footwear for families buying branded casual, dress and athletic shoes through its DSW and The Shoe Co. stores and websites. Its Retail segment’s sales offer a read on the family shoe spending both businesses pursue.
Shoe Station Group’s Shoe Carnival and Shoe Station compete directly with Caleres’ Famous Footwear for families buying shoes in stores and online. Watch its shift toward Shoe Station, which serves a broader, more affluent customer base with premium brands, while Shoe Carnival focuses on value for moderate- to low-income families.
Steven Madden competes with Caleres brands such as Sam Edelman and Franco Sarto for fashion-shoe buyers and space in retailers’ assortments. Its sales of shoes to retailers and clubs—the Wholesale Footwear business—offer a read on demand from the buyers Caleres’ Brand Portfolio also serves.
Genesco challenges Caleres on two fronts: Journeys competes with Famous Footwear for casual-shoe shoppers, while Johnston & Murphy overlaps with Allen Edmonds. Watch Journeys’ store and online sales for casual-footwear demand, and Johnston & Murphy’s retail and wholesale business for the Allen Edmonds overlap.
Wolverine World Wide competes with parts of Caleres’ brand portfolio by selling casual and active footwear to consumers and wholesale buyers. Its Merrell, Saucony and Chaco footwear businesses are the ones to watch for demand in those categories.
Deckers’ UGG, HOKA and Teva compete with Caleres’ casual and athletic shoes for consumer spending and retail shelf space, selling both to retailers and directly through their own stores and websites. Watch its wholesale sales alongside direct sales to see demand from both retailers and shoe buyers.
Birkenstock supplies branded shoes that Caleres’ Famous Footwear sells to shoppers, but also competes with Vionic and Naturalizer for comfort-footwear buyers. Demand for its footbed-based styles, including Arizona and Boston, matters both to Famous Footwear’s assortment and to competition for Caleres’ own brands.
Macy’s pays Caleres for brands such as Sam Edelman and Naturalizer to sell in its shoe assortment, making it a customer as well as a rival to Famous Footwear for footwear shoppers.
Kohl’s competes with Caleres’ Famous Footwear for families buying moderately priced national-brand shoes in stores and online. Its footwear sales offer a read on spending in the price-conscious family market Famous Footwear serves.
Steven Madden Ltd earningsSHOO
Steven Madden’s Wholesale Footwear sales will show whether retailers and clubs are ordering fashion shoes—a read on buyers that also stock Caleres brands.
Watch Steven Madden’s Wholesale Footwear sales: it sells shoes to retailers and clubs that also buy from Caleres’ Brand Portfolio. Stronger sales would indicate that these buyers’ orders are holding up, supporting the conditions for Caleres to win orders and shelf space; weaker sales could mean buyers are pulling back or allocating space to other brands. This is a read on wholesale demand and competition, not a result for Caleres itself.
Retail Sales MoM (Oct)
Retail sales track how much consumers spend at stores, which can affect demand for footwear at Famous Footwear and Caleres’ sales to consumers and retail customers.
If retail sales are strong, consumers are spending more, which may support footwear demand at Famous Footwear and orders from Caleres’ retail customers; if weak, the reverse may weigh on those sales.
Shoe Station Group, Inc. earningsSHOE
Shoe Station Group’s report will show whether family shoe demand is shifting toward its broader, more affluent Shoe Station customer or remains centered on value—an important read on the shoppers Famous Footwear serves.
Compare sales at Shoe Station, which serves a broader, more affluent customer, with Shoe Carnival, which focuses on value-conscious families. Strength at Shoe Station would point to support for more premium footwear and an opportunity for Caleres to reach those shoppers; steadier Shoe Carnival results would make value-focused family demand the more important signal, with greater price pressure for Famous Footwear. The comparison shows which customer group’s shoe spending is holding up better.
Macy's Inc. earningsM
Macy’s footwear sales will show whether this retailer and Caleres customer has demand to support orders for brands such as Sam Edelman and Naturalizer.
Read Macy’s footwear sales alongside its broader retail results. Steady shoe sales would suggest shoppers are still buying footwear at this department-store customer, supporting its ability to keep ordering Caleres brands; weaker shoe sales could mean fewer orders and less opportunity for Caleres brands in Macy’s stores. The report speaks to this customer channel, not all of Caleres’ retailers.
Caleres Inc earningsThis company
Caleres’ report will show whether Famous Footwear and its Brand Portfolio can turn sales into stronger segment earnings without further gross-margin erosion.
Read sales, gross margin and segment operating earnings together for both businesses. Segment operating earnings are gross profit less selling and administrative expenses and certain other charges. Sales growth with steadier margins and improving segment earnings would show that more revenue is converting into operating earnings. If sales grow while margins or segment earnings weaken, discounts, product costs or the sales mix are still absorbing the revenue, and Caleres has not turned growth into better operating returns.
