Company

Company overview

Cable One serves mainly smaller cities and non-metropolitan communities in the western, midwestern and southern United States. Households and businesses pay for internet access over its fiber and hybrid fiber-coaxial networks, with residential plans priced by speed and options. Home internet supplies most revenue, and business internet is the next-largest line. A significant portion of revenue comes from month-to-month subscriptions that customers can cancel without penalty.

The company also sells television and phone services, but it is placing less emphasis on television and focusing on higher-margin internet services. Television carries substantial programming and broadcast retransmission costs, leaving less of each customer payment to cover the rest of the business.

Its business depends on retaining subscribers against competing fiber and wireless providers and continuing to invest in network capacity and service quality. Network deployment requires access to utility poles and underground conduits. Its television systems also rely on renewable, non-exclusive local or state authorizations to use public rights-of-way, subject to fees and service requirements.

  • Charter and Cable One both collect fees from U.S. households and businesses for cable-network broadband, so keeping subscribers matters to both. Watch whether Charter’s Internet-and-mobile bundles reduce customer departures: Cable One is testing mobile as a complement to wired broadband to help retain customers.

  • Optimum Communications, Inc. and Cable One both sell broadband and video services to U.S. households and businesses, with network returns depending on keeping subscribers while upgrading cable and fiber infrastructure. Optimum’s fiber rollout and the maintenance and outage savings it expects offer a comparison for Cable One’s own network investment.

  • Comcast’s broadband and cable-TV services for households and businesses face the same subscriber and network-upgrade pressures as Cable One, but its substantial entertainment businesses make the whole company a less direct comparison. Watch its residential and business connectivity results rather than media or theme parks when assessing Cable One’s broadband revenue and declining video business.

  • Cable One is a customer of Harmonic Inc, which sells operators the software, hardware and services used to deliver broadband, tying Harmonic to Cable One’s network-capacity upgrades. Watch developments in Harmonic’s cOS platform for multi-gigabit service as Cable One expands its network capabilities.
