Company

Company overview

Baytex Energy Corp.’s business centers on Peace River and Lloydminster heavy oil properties, alongside Viking and Duvernay light oil properties in Western Canada. It sold its U.S. Eagle Ford assets in late 2025. Heavy oil supplies most sales revenue; light oil, condensate, natural gas liquids and natural gas provide the rest.

Buyers pay Baytex for oil and gas delivered to agreed sales points under contracts typically tied to commodity-price benchmarks, adjusted for quality, location and delivery terms. Sales are concentrated among a small group of large customers. Baytex relies on third-party gathering, processing and pipeline systems to reach buyers. Its earnings depend heavily on commodity prices and the discounts Canadian production receives when transport capacity or market access is limited.

Producing wells gradually exhaust their reserves, so Baytex must invest in finding, acquiring and developing replacement supplies. Its production rights depend on leases, licences and permits, with work, production or payment requirements. Environmental approvals and rules restrict how it can develop and operate properties, and it must close wells and restore sites at the end of their productive lives.

  • Obsidian Energy and Baytex compete for oil buyers in overlapping Western Canadian markets, with both developing Peace River heavy-oil assets.

  • Canadian Natural and Baytex sell heavy and light crude from Alberta and Saskatchewan into overlapping markets, so oil prices and access to pipelines matter to both. Watch Canadian Natural’s heavy-crude selling prices for signs of the discounts affecting Baytex’s oil revenue.

  • Cenovus and Baytex both produce heavy oil in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but Cenovus also turns crude into fuels for sale, partly offsetting the heavy-oil discounts that hurt Baytex. Watch Cenovus’s heavy-oil production and refining results separately: stronger refining margins need not mean better crude revenue for Baytex.

  • Ovintiv and Baytex both produce and sell Canadian oil, natural gas liquids and gas, sharing exposure to commodity prices and access to buyers. Ovintiv’s Canadian sales are the closer comparison; its Montney and U.S. assets make its overall results a less direct guide to Baytex’s heavy-oil-led business.
