Company

Company overview

Most of Balchem Corporation’s revenue comes from human nutrition and health. Food, beverage and nutrition-product manufacturers buy its nutrients, such as choline and mineral ingredients, and customized food ingredients. Balchem also helps customers develop products and bring them into commercial production. Its human-nutrition business depends on scientific evidence, proprietary technology and brand recognition to distinguish its ingredients from lower-cost alternatives.

Animal nutrition is the next-largest business. Balchem sells nutrient supplements and choline chloride for livestock and pets. Demand for its specialized supplements depends on livestock-industry economics and research demonstrating benefits for animal health and production; its more commodity-like choline chloride business competes on quality, service and production costs.

A separate business repackages and distributes gases and chemicals in specialized drums and cylinders. Contract sterilizers and medical-device manufacturers buy ethylene oxide to sterilize devices; other customers buy chemicals for food fumigation and industrial uses. This business depends partly on permitted uses of those chemicals. U.S. ethylene oxide rules require emissions controls, monitoring and worker-exposure reporting, phase out certain spice uses, and prohibit continued sales to users who fail to provide required exposure data.

Balchem Corporation’s results depend mainly on demand for differentiated human-nutrition and food ingredients, with added exposure to livestock-production economics and medical-device sterilization demand rather than broad industrial chemicals.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Fed’s decision tracks the benchmark rate that influences borrowing costs; it matters to Balchem because its floating-rate revolving credit debt can cost more or less to service.
