At Build-A-Bear Workshop stores, customers choose a stuffed animal, fill it with stuffing, then dress, accessorize and name it. Families with children are the main store customers; online shoppers are more often collectors and gift buyers, including teens and adults. Nearly all revenue comes from sales through company-managed stores and online sites, including ready-made plush and licensed characters from brands such as Sanrio, Disney and Pokémon.
Other businesses also pay Build-A-Bear. Partners such as Carnival Cruise Line and Great Wolf Lodge Resorts operate workshops and buy their inventory wholesale from the company. International franchise operators pay royalties and buy merchandise and fixtures, providing a smaller revenue stream.
Birthdays drive a substantial share of sales, and physical stores generate most sales, making mall and tourist-location traffic important to the business. Licensed merchandise depends on demand for the characters and continued access to agreements with their owners. Build-A-Bear does not manufacture its merchandise itself: a small group of suppliers provides most of it, largely from China and Vietnam, without long-term commitments to supply it at acceptable prices.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Build-A-Bear Workshop depends partly on birthday gifting and demand for licensed characters such as Sanrio’s, while specialist plush rivals Jellycat and Ty are missing from this list.
Mattel’s plush, dolls and accessories compete for families’ toy budgets with Build-A-Bear Workshop’s personalized stuffed animals and gifts. Watch sales of those Mattel products for signs of where families are spending, rather than treating its whole toy business as a direct comparison.
Hasbro competes with Build-A-Bear Workshop for families’ and fans’ toy and gift spending through branded toys and collectibles. Its sales to fans through Hasbro PULSE are worth watching alongside Build-A-Bear’s online business, which focuses on collectors and gift buyers.
Build-A-Bear Workshop’s Disney-character merchandise depends on those characters staying popular and on Disney continuing to grant it the rights to use them. The Walt Disney Company earns revenue from licensing its characters; watch its entertainment releases and licensing news, since weak demand or lost rights can leave Build-A-Bear discounting merchandise, potentially below cost.
Mattel, Inc. earningsMAT
Mattel's report can show whether families are still spending on dolls and related products that compete with Build-A-Bear Workshop for toy and gift budgets.
Focus on Mattel's reported sales in dolls and related products, not its entire toy business as if it were a direct comparison. Resilient sales in those products would suggest families are still spending in this part of the toy market, easing budget pressure on Build-A-Bear Workshop's personalized plush. Weak sales would point to tighter spending in an overlapping category and more pressure on demand for Build-A-Bear Workshop.

Walt Disney's report and licensing disclosures can show whether its characters remain popular and licensed to Build-A-Bear Workshop for its related plush merchandise.
Watch Disney's disclosures on entertainment demand, consumer-products performance and any licensing information relevant to Build-A-Bear Workshop. Strong interest in the characters and related products would support demand for licensed plush; weaker demand, or disclosed loss of relevant rights, would make Build-A-Bear Workshop's related inventory harder to sell and could force discounts, potentially below cost.
Retail Sales MoM (Oct)
Build-A-Bear’s retail sales track how much consumers spend at retailers, which can signal demand for its birthday-driven make-your-own experiences, plush and other merchandise and affect sales through its stores and online.
More retail spending may support visits and purchases of Build-A-Bear’s birthday-driven experiences and merchandise; less spending may mean fewer transactions and weaker sales, though the release alone cannot show how much spending reaches its business.

Build-A-Bear Workshop's report will show whether spending in its stores and online can grow enough to absorb merchandise, labor and tariff costs without squeezing retail gross margin.
Read sales at existing stores and online alongside retail gross margin. Stronger sales in both channels with a steady margin would show customer demand is supporting the business without merchandise and operating costs eating into product profit. Weaker sales and a falling margin would show that softer demand and higher costs are squeezing it.
