Company

Company overview

Arq earns most of its revenue from products used in pollution control and purification. Coal-fired power plants, industrial operators and water-treatment and remediation customers buy its activated carbon and other chemicals to capture contaminants. It sells mainly through its own sales team under multiyear customer contracts, supplying products as customers place orders. It also sells activated carbon to its largest customer, which serves a range of markets.

Arq owns the Five Forks Mine, which supplies lignite for its powdered activated carbon, and depends on its Red River Plant for activated-carbon manufacturing. A few large customers account for a substantial share of revenue. Demand depends especially on coal-fired electricity generation and requirements to remove mercury emissions, as well as water-treatment needs and environmental rules. State or municipal approvals also affect whether its granular activated carbon can enter particular markets.

Its granular activated carbon facility began commercial production but is now paused after design flaws prevented the planned production ramp-up. Arq is reviewing modifications and production economics before further investment, so that expansion is not yet an established revenue source.

Arq's results hinge on coal-power purification demand and the economics of producing activated carbon; its primary competitors, Norit Americas and Kuraray-owned Calgon Carbon, are absent from this list.
