Company

Company overview

Most of Apyx Medical’s revenue comes from cosmetic-surgery equipment and single-use handpieces, with handpieces contributing a substantial share. Its Renuvion system uses radiofrequency energy and helium to deliver a plasma beam that cuts, coagulates or ablates soft tissue. AYON combines fat removal with Renuvion tissue contraction and other surgical functions. Physicians, cosmetic surgery offices and surgical centers buy primarily through the company’s direct sales force in the United States; distributors are the main route outside the country.

Equipment purchases and ongoing handpiece demand depend on doctors adopting the systems and patients choosing procedures. These cosmetic procedures are elective and patients pay for them without government or private health-insurance reimbursement, so demand depends on patients’ ability and willingness to spend. Medical-device clearances restrict the uses Apyx may promote, and new or expanded uses require regulatory clearance.

A smaller business develops and manufactures devices and accessories for other medical-device companies, including products supplied to Symmetry Surgical under a manufacturing agreement. Apyx also supports hospital surgeons using its J-Plasma technology in some international markets.

Apyx Medical’s results hinge on cosmetic-surgery procedure volumes and adoption of Renuvion and AYON, while privately held MicroAire Surgical Instruments also competes directly in liposuction.

  • InMode competes for aesthetic surgeons’ equipment spending with platforms that reduce fat and tighten skin using radio-frequency energy, against Apyx Medical’s Renuvion tissue-contraction and AYON body-contouring systems. Watch InMode’s sales of these platforms for signs of competition for the same surgeons’ purchases.

  • Bausch Health’s Solta Medical sells liposuction equipment that competes directly with Apyx Medical’s AYON for cosmetic-surgery customers. Bausch Health also sells pharmaceuticals and eye-health products, so its Solta Medical aesthetic-device revenue is more relevant to this rivalry than its group sales.
