Company

Company overview

Akanda Corp.’s main business is now First Towers, which owns telecommunications equipment and towers and operates a fiber-optic network in Mexico. Telecommunications companies pay to use its equipment, tower space and fiber network. This infrastructure business supplies Akanda’s revenue, while its planned Canadian cannabis operation has not yet generated sales.

First Towers relies on long-term leases, including a contract with an anchor telecommunications customer. Maintaining and expanding its infrastructure requires substantial capital, and local permitting can limit where it builds. Akanda has relied primarily on share issues and borrowing to fund its operations; further infrastructure development depends on obtaining additional funding.

Akanda has discontinued its European cannabis operations but still plans to develop hemp and THC/CBD cultivation facilities on Gabriola Island in British Columbia. Cultivation there has not begun. Its subsidiary holds an industrial-hemp propagation license, but launching the broader operation requires additional funding and the necessary licenses and regulatory approvals.

  • American Tower competes with Akanda’s First Towers for telecommunications companies renting wireless tower space, and First Towers names it as a tower-development rival. Watch American Tower’s Latin America property revenue for a regional read on the tower-leasing market that First Towers serves in Mexico.
