Most of Alcoa’s revenue comes from selling primary aluminum to manufacturers and traders. Manufacturers turn its metal into products for transportation, construction, packaging and other industrial uses. Alcoa sells both standard ingots and metal cast into shapes and alloys to suit customers’ needs.
Alcoa mines bauxite and refines it into alumina, the material smelters use to make aluminum. Most of its bauxite feeds its own refineries, but most of its alumina is sold to outside customers, chiefly aluminum smelters; the rest supplies its own smelters. These outside alumina sales provide another substantial revenue stream.
Selling prices largely follow commodity markets: aluminum prices combine a London Metal Exchange benchmark with regional delivery and product premiums, while alumina contracts generally track published spot prices with negotiated adjustments. Earnings therefore depend on these prices and the cost of running energy-intensive plants. Alcoa buys most of its smelters’ electricity, generally under long-term arrangements. Mining also requires government approvals. Approval delays in Western Australia have led it to use lower-grade bauxite, raising refining costs and reducing alumina output.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Alcoa’s results hinge on aluminum and alumina prices and energy costs; also watch Norsk Hydro as a primary aluminum rival and South32 as an alumina rival.
Century Aluminum and Alcoa sell primary aluminum into the same global market, so both feel changes in the London Metal Exchange metal price and the regional premium buyers pay for delivery. Watch Century’s realized prices for standard-grade and value-added aluminum for a read on the pricing conditions facing Alcoa’s sales to manufacturers and traders.
Rio Tinto competes with Alcoa to sell alumina used in smelting and primary aluminum, but they also jointly develop ELYSIS, a process intended to make aluminum without direct greenhouse-gas emissions. Watch Rio’s industrial-scale demonstration, with first production expected by 2027: Alcoa can buy up to 40% of its output for its customers.
Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)
Durable goods orders track purchases of long-lasting goods and equipment, including transportation equipment, that use Alcoa aluminum; stronger demand can support customer orders and shipments, while weaker demand can reduce them.

If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 0.2% estimate, it is above the previous -0.1%. More orders point to stronger demand from transportation and other industrial customers, which may increase their purchases of Alcoa’s commodity-grade and value-added aluminum products and support shipments.
If it comes in below expectations
Fewer orders point to weaker demand from transportation and other industrial customers, which may reduce their purchases of Alcoa’s aluminum products and weigh on shipments.
Century Aluminum Co earningsCENX
Century Aluminum’s realized aluminum prices show the pricing conditions Alcoa also faces when selling metal to manufacturers and traders.
Look at Century’s realized prices for standard-grade and value-added aluminum. Rising prices would show that market pricing is supporting sellers such as Alcoa; flat or falling prices would mean less pricing support for Alcoa’s aluminum sales. Century’s product mix may differ, so its figures are a market signal, not Alcoa’s own result.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
Industrial production and capacity use track factory, mine and utility activity that drives demand for Alcoa’s alumina and aluminum; stronger activity can support customer purchases and shipments, while weaker activity can reduce them.
Rising industrial output and capacity use suggest stronger demand for Alcoa’s alumina and aluminum from smelters and industrial customers; falling readings suggest weaker demand and potentially fewer purchases.
