The ISM Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, or PMI, surveys US manufacturers about conditions including orders, production and employment; it is not measured factory output. Above 50 indicates expansion and below 50 contraction. The previous reading was 54.5; no estimate is supplied. With factory momentum fading while steelmakers benefit from higher prices, October's survey tests whether customer demand is broad enough to support production.[1]

Watch whether new orders and production improve together, then check prices paid. Stronger demand generally supports revenue at industrial-equipment makers, steel producers and freight companies, but faster material and energy cost increases can still squeeze downstream manufacturers. Weaker orders with persistent price pressure would threaten both sales and profit; falling costs could provide some cushion. The previous 54.5 is context, not a consensus forecast, and index changes cannot be translated directly into output growth.[1]
