AI demand and tight supply support memory makers' sales, while a larger Chinese competitor adds pressure on Micron and its peers.
Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, reported a 613% increase in third-quarter revenue on October 30, taking sales to more than seven times the comparison level. The report attributed the growth to strong demand for memory used in artificial intelligence infrastructure amid tight global supplies.[1]
Memory chips hold data that processors need while working, making them an important part of AI servers. CXMT's results point to its growing position in a global industry where Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron face increasing competition.[1]
AI infrastructure spending increases chip purchases, while tight supply helps memory makers sell their products and retain bargaining power. CXMT's rapid revenue growth shows it is capturing that demand, giving established suppliers a competitor with greater commercial scale.[1]
If CXMT can keep increasing deliveries of products customers need, buyers could gain more sourcing options, weakening existing suppliers' pricing power. Revenue growth alone cannot establish how much came from higher sales volumes versus prices, or when the global shortage might ease.[1]
Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix must contend with a growing Chinese competitor. AI demand and tight supply still support their businesses; sustained growth in CXMT's deliveries of products customers need could make orders and pricing harder to defend.[1]
