Chip suppliers are helping fund a customer's AI expansion, potentially supporting orders while taking on exposure to that customer's share value.
On October 27, AMD announced a $1 billion investment in Meta's equity offering alongside an expanded partnership to develop computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads.[1]
Meta is offering up to $95 billion of stock, raising money by selling shares in the company.[2] Nvidia separately announced a $3 billion investment, putting two competing chip suppliers into the same customer's financing.[3]
The investment makes AMD a source of capital for its customer as well as a supplier. If Meta uses the proceeds to expand AI computing capacity, it could buy more chips and supporting equipment. The expanded partnership could help AMD compete for that business, although the reports give no purchase commitment or order value tied to the investment.[1][2]
AMD also takes on exposure to its customer's share price: future chip sales could benefit, while the value of its Meta shares could fall. Nvidia's participation shows Meta continues to work with competing chip suppliers, leaving the allocation of future demand open.[1][3]
