PPI looks at prices earlier in the pipeline, before they show up in store shelves and service bills. Markets expect June PPI to cool to 0.0% from 0.6%, so the question is whether upstream price pressure is easing enough to back up the softer inflation story. That matters even in a calm tape because it affects how much room companies have to protect margins.
PPI lands closest to manufacturers and other firms that deal with input costs every day. If upstream prices keep rising, margin pressure can build; if PPI cools, those costs are easier to absorb.
